Helpful Tips:
For those who need that final push towards a successful career fair experience.
1. Clean, steam, or press your chosen professional attire.
You may appear as unkept and unprofessional to potential employers which makes a poor impression on your end without you ever speaking.
2. Practice moving around and sitting in professional attire.
You will be engaging and speaking to employers for three hours so, it is best you are comfortable for the entire duration of the career fair so that clothing discomfort is not mistaken for negative body language.
3. Research what companies are attending the career fair.
If you show prior interest and knowledge of a company present at the career fair it may give you an edge against other candidates.
4. Prepare substantial questions for companies of interest.
Alongside distinguishing yourself with prior knowledge, it is best to then prepare good questions to maintain the company’s interest in you.
5. Always say “Thank You”.
Being polite during and saying “thank you” after every conversation helps build professionalism and ends your discussions on a positive note.
6. Email those who took time to talk to you.
Specifically tailor each email and reiterate your interest in the company. A crucial part of networking; it demonstrates authenticity to the employer as well as effective communication skills.
7. Polish your resumé and bring several copies.
If your resumé is not up to standard, you may be deemed unprofessional by employers and in turn you may not be considered for employment. Research resumé templates (LinkedIn and Indeed offer basic templates, or you could find others through Google). Keep your resumé as simple as possible, down to one page. List only the highlights of your work and achievements on your resumé. Make a separate portfolio for a complete and comprehensive archive of all your work.
8. Be prepared to discuss your background, qualifications, and career goals.
Show potential employers that you are serious about furthering your career so that they feel inclined to help you achieve discussed career goals.
9. Have a general pitch prepared.
First impressions may make or break you –make sure yours is a strong one, but above all a positive one. Be prepared to modify depending on what company you are talking with.
10. Stay organized
Take note of what companies you spoke with and which one’s interest you for future reference. Make a list of contacts and companies afterwards with dates alongside follow-up instruction.
