About Us

The Echo Newspaper is Western Connecticut State University’s central student news source, proudly independent and student-run since 1955. We collaborate to provide an outlet for student voices with our fellow student media organizations, including our sister publication the Black & White literary journal, the CLIO history journal, the Broadcast Educational Association, and the student radio station WXCI 91.7 FM.

Our office is located in Room 217 Midtown Student Center, on the WCSU Midtown campus at 181 White Street, Danbury, CT 06810. You can contact us online at echo@wcsu.edu with tips, story pitches, or other inquiries.

Inquiries about the Black & White literary journal, campus events, policy and governance can be directed to pubs@wcsu.edu.

2025/2026 Echo Staff

Ian Hendrie

Ian is a junior political science major and whose passion is getting students involved on-campus. To that effect, he’s the President of the Student Action Union and the Vice President of Sigma Chi! If one student is more aware of what’s going on around them because of something I do or write, that will be a victory in his book.

Victor Johnston

Victor is the chief editor of The Echo. He is also an editor and designer of the literary magazine The Howl, and is the secretary for WCSU’s Student Action Union. He has a passion for writing; both fiction and journalism. When he’s let out of the Student Publications Office every once in a while, he simply likes to hang out with friends on campus.

Adrienne Wallace

Adrienne is currently studying Professional Writing at WCSU with a concentration in Creative Writing. When not focused on school and writing, she can be found reading, listening to music, or eating gummy bears.

Andrew Warren

Andrew is a professional writing student at WCSU with a focus on journalism and public relations. He is fascinated with journalistic writing and editing and is pursuing a career in those fields. Outside of writing, he enjoys reading, watching pro-wrestling and listening to music. He is very excited to gain more exposure within The Howl.

Jack Dutt

Jack Dutt is former editor of The Echo from Newtown, CT. An avid fan of Magic: The Gathering, he graduated with a degree in Journalism in 2022. Alongside Brian Emro, he was co-president of student publications for Spring 2022.

Brian Emro

Alongside Jack Dutt, Brian served as co-president of Student Publications for Spring 2022. His writings have been published by the CT Post.

Sam Cross

Sam was editor of our sister publication, the Black & White literary journal, and treasurer for Student Publications. Hers was the unenviable responsibility of making sure those head-in-the-clouds authors actually turn in their edits and budget forms on time. Somehow, between all this, she still managed to write about music and campus events.

Jenna Visca

Jenna was co-editor of the Black & White literary journal, and secretary for Student Publications. Although her contributions to The Echo are behind the scenes, like Sam the newspaper would not function without her.

Mathew Schumer

Mathew was a Professional Writing Major at WCSU, having previously attended Housatonic and Norwalk Community Colleges. Mathew served as a staff writer for The Echo, and liaison with WXCI 91.7 campus radio station.

Ryan Yursha

Ryan was a Professional Writing graduate with a focus on journalism and public relations who wrote for The Echo from 2017-2020. Ryan is partial to the literary stylings of Hunter S. Thompson and David Foster Wallace, and the alcoholic stylings of Yuengling.

Joseph Oliveri

Joseph was an opinion columnist and senior Communication Studies major from Putnam County. He reported for The Echo from 2017 to 2020, and also worked as a writing consultant at the Writing Center in the Haas Library. His work was also published in The Putnam Examiner, The Westchester Examiner, and The Ridgefield Press.

Audrey Nielsen

Audrey wrote and edited for The Echo from 2018-2021, and graduated as a Professional Writing major with a concentration in journalism and public relations.
