WCSU Hosts Winter Clubs Carnival

This past Wednesday, Western Connecticut State University hosted its biannual Clubs Carnival, giving students the opportunity to explore the various clubs and student-run organizations the university has to offer. The event was held in the Westside Campus Ballroom, starting at noon, and ending at 4 p.m.

For those who attended the Clubs Carnival back September, this event was a second chance to explore the various clubs offered at our university. Perhaps you saw a club last time that you regretted not joining, or maybe something new has piqued your interest.

For a freshman such as myself, and many others, those tables were opportunities to continue making the transition to college a bit more bearable. It could be a bit nerve-wracking as some may feel indecisive or even overwhelmed at the thought of striking up a conversation. While finding a new social circle can be a bit overwhelming, luckily, friendly faces welcomed everyone searching for a new place to belong.

The clubs represented covered a variety of fields from academic groups, such as CLIO, the history journal; to student publications like Black & White; to more special-interest or social groups centering around sports, media, life post-college, the performing arts, wanting to see the world, and equality and inclusivity for all. I was able to interview representatives from some of the clubs present and spread the word in case anyone may be interested in joining.

Black Student Union

As February is Black History Month, I will begin by introducing the Black Student Union. President Zanaya Ritter describes the organization as a family that “invites students to come over to learn about Black culture, but also a chance to have a safe space and talk about the things that go on in the world.” She puts emphasis not only on education, but also hosting fun events that anyone can take part in, such as their Social Sundays and fashion shows. The club as a community brings back memories of when she was a freshman and was empowered by the club’s presence and inclusivity among non-Black students. She hopes that others may feel the same when they attend a club meeting.

If you are interested in being a part of the Black Student Union, you can reach Ritter through email at Ritter015@wcsu.edu or find the club on Instagram @bsu_wcsu.

Social Work Club

Sometimes, college can be overwhelming, and we all must remind ourselves to not push aside our own mental health. If self-care is something that piques your interest, then the Social Work Club may be right for you. Secretary Kayla Giradi explained ‘the club is dedicated to hosting events centered around self-care and positivity.’ She also notes that in the past, the club has engaged in charitable acts such as community service and hosting food drives. While Girardi notes that the club is still new, they are excited to explore what they can contribute to the school. Their next event, the exact date unknown at this time, will be centered around self-care.

Anyone interested in joining can reach out and stay updated on the goings on over on Instagram @swclub_wcsu.

CLIO History Journal

CLIO is “West Conn’s scholarly journal for history and we publish student-written articles about history.” CLIO President Evan Walker mentions that papers do not have to center around topics from centuries ago but can be about anything from any period. CLIO has received papers covering subject matter from just a little over twenty years ago to all the way back to 1 B.C. He also emphasizes the importance of giving the students a voice through the journal by having it be student-run. The club encourages anyone interested in history with work they’d like to share to reach out. Some upcoming events that are currently being planned include history trivia and public essay readings.

For those interested in contributing to the journal, or just want to be part of the club in general, can contact Walker through email @walker199@wcsu.edu.

Adventure Club

Perhaps you have been itching to get outside and explore the great outdoors once again? For those who appreciate nature, President Nick Peschier welcomes you. As the name implies, the Adventure Club finds new opportunities for getting in touch with nature through fun activities such as camping, hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and much more. At times, their escapades have taken them cross country, going as far out as Utah. According to their Instagram page, the club describes their members as “adventure junkies,” though Peschier simply described them as people who just appreciate nature like him.

Their next outing will be a backpacking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. An interest meeting is scheduled for February 9th in the Midtown Student Center in room 209.

The Adventure Club can be reached via email peschier001@wcsu.edu or on Instagram @wcsu_wac.

International Student Association

Last, but not least, is a club that has recently popped back on the radar of the WCSU clubs. The International Student Association is another club centered around culture, though they focus more on cultures from outside of the United States and all corners of the globe. Their small, but loyal membership come from backgrounds ranging from Georgian to Italian to British to Finnish. President Mariana Bankhardt, hailing from Brazil, is interested in “promoting international awareness to campus.” This includes inviting students from all backgrounds to share their culture (whether that be through customs, food, traditions, etc.) and learn about the diverse student body at West Conn. They also take part in welcoming exchange students arriving in the United States for the first time.

While the club is not planning any events currently, keep an eye out for their bake sales on Midtown, featuring international treats from both their own and other cultures.

If you are interested in learning more, you can find them on Instagram @wcsu_international_club or reach Bankhardt at bankhardt001@wcsu.edu.
