It’s been three months since we last reported on A.I., and its advancement into everyday life. In the past three months, A.I. has expanded immensely.
A.I. in 2021 and 2022 was in its infancy, with the most popular usage by the public coming in the form of ambiguous or abstract art. In its writing, it could barely put together a sentence. And when it mimicked speech or tried to make a sound, it was monotone and lifeless.
Now, it seems like new innovations and breakthroughs in A.I. break headlines as a daily occurrence. From deep fakes of The Pope in a puffer jacket going viral while fooling millions, to A.I. recreating images from brainwaves. When looking through feeds on social media, the chance of a user seeing A.I. content is almost a guarantee, seeing as how social platforms are using A.I. to push content to viewers.
But how has A.I. grown so rapidly in such a short span of time? The answer is simple, and complex. The simple part is because it has been set loose. With millions accessing and using A.I. on a daily basis, the knowledge pool that it has access to has grown exponentially. With more knowledge to pull from previous conversations, it is able to build more coherent responses or creations. Its writing has become more coherent, its art has become nearly picture-like, and its sound mimicking is now life-like.
The complex answer has to do with its use in industry and science, and not in its public sector. Systems like ChatGPT, Google Cloud Learning, Dall-E 2, and the bounty of others that have flooded the market within the past year has peaked the interest of those looking to pass a class, create a piece of art, or create a new meme template. There is a multitude of others that are being used in almost every field imaginable.
Some of its biggest breakouts thus far have been in I.T., finance, marketing, healthcare, and transportation, and it’s already reshaping how we look at the future of our workforce and the possibilities in those fields. While the public sector programs are working around the clock pooling from abstract conversations, industrial A.I.’s are working non-stop in a limited environment. That means that its knowledge pool may be limited in some fields, while hyper advanced and ever growing in a others.
Take Marketing for example. Responsive Search Ads by Google has made it to where ads are placed on sites related to that field or that product. But you might be saying that you’ve seen that for years now. Well, you have, however, Responsive Search can now track your search history and site traffic, and can see your click through rate (time on site), and your engagement with the site. Let’s say you’re looking for a wrench to change your car’s oil. In the past, every site you went to it would push ads for wrenches. Now, it will realize that based on your site engagement, that it should stop pushing ads for wrenches, and it will start pushing ads for oil, gloves, and car jacks. In short, it knows what you will search for next before you even can think of it, and it will personalize your ads not just to a community level of like-minded web searchers, but to your internet fingerprint specifically.
For those familiar with A.I. and its history, you’ll know that these breakthroughs and growths have been steady and continuous. However, to most, A.I. has taken the world by storm, with never before imagined possibilities. Three months ago, I ended my story by asking what role AI will play in our collective future. While I don’t have the answer to that question, I know that we as students can use it to our advantage in everyday life. By understanding how to use it for business and work now, it may help you on your journey to success. Below is a list of A.I. I have found that may help you with this, while also being free to use.
