This week, the Echo Student Newspaper ceased to exist as a club entity, replaced by the Echo Media Organization, a fully owned subsidiary of Campbell Consolidated Capital. The buyout was the result of austerity measures imposed on student organizations at WCSU in light of shortfalls to student activity fees and cuts to the state budget. Unable to meet rising costs on the budget allocated by SGA last year and without hope of increased resources to meet inflation, the Student Publications Board has made the unprecedented move to privatize the newspaper in order to ensure its continued existence.
The President, CEO, and owner of CCC, Campbell Mitchell, had formerly served as Vice President of Student Publications, and before that as editor for the echo, overseeing technical maintenance and site security. Mr. Mitchell has announced a sweeping series of reforms, including an expansion of the Echo’s targeted advertising, to include future revisions to the data protection policy, the supplementing of current staff writers with artificial intelligence, and the implementation of a new monetization policy.
As anxious writers gathered outside the office of the Echo newspaper in Midtown Student Center to hear their fate, a press conference was called to reassure students that the Echo would continue to provide news services to the WCSU community. Additionally, writers will retain ultimate ownership of all previous submissions, as the change in organizational ownership only covers rights to host the content and manage costs and revenues from the platform.
“We seek to more efficiently operationalize our strategies, synergize our core competencies, charting our brand trajectory towards proven methodologies promoting sustainability.” A spokesperson for CCC sang in three part harmony during the press conference. “Through class-platform innovation, networking soon will bring seamless integration.”
The statement continued, detailing the new approach to monetization. In addition to expanded advertising, certain articles on the Echo will be subject to “supply-based consumer pricing.” Readers will be able to purchase Echo Black membership through Patreon. Members will gain exclusive access to archival content, priority review for comments, and early access to new editors’s picks articles. The paywall will be rolled out in stages until it is effective site-wide April 1st.
At press time, representatives of CCC were last seen negotiating the final terms of the purchase with officials from SGA and university administration over a private dinner hosted at the Mitchell family summer residence in upstate New York.
