Most recently, on October 24, 2022, WXCI Sports Director Evan Walker, host of the program “The Oval Office” and DJ Niko Bass interviewed Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. On November 2, 2022,the two also interviewed his opponent for Governor, Republican candidate Bob Stefanowski.
Both were fifteen-minute virtual interviews conducted over Zoom. Topics were the same for both candidates and included reproductive rights, school funding, specifically funding for teachers, the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as housing. One topic that was brought up with both candidates was funding cuts to Western Connecticut State University, in particular the debate over the future of the Social Sciences programs. Both candidates expressed broad support for the liberal arts and continued funding of the state universities, but declined to go into details.
The interviews ended with a personal question about each interviewee’s favorite music. Governor Lamont proudly stated he is a Grateful Dead fan while Stefanowski declared himself a fan of 80’s music. While signing off, Lamont also expressed interest in coming back on WXCI, if possible, in person next time.
To listen to the interviews, listeners can tune into WXCI’s program The Advocate for the replays. WXCI has also stated they will upload recordings to the radio station’s site wxci.org at a later date. WXCI 91.7 is Western Connecticut State University’s official campus radio station, broadcasting from Midtown Student Center daily, and a proud partner of the Echo.
