After the thrilling win against Plymouth State University, 34-27, on October 8, the Wolves football team had an abundance of momentum and were hungry for another win.
On Saturday October 15, 2022, the Western Connecticut State University football team dominated the Rams of Framingham State University at the Westside Athletic Complex for the first time in eight years since the Wolves entered the MASCAC conference in 2013. With a score of 35-14, the Wolves celebrated their well-deserved victory.
The Wolves started with the ball where the offense stormed down the field covering 77 yards in just under five minutes. The starting offensive line: junior Daniel Barry, junior Pat Adams, freshman George Kostas, sophomore Desmond Sampson, and sophomore Shawn Patterson protected sophomore quarterback John Giller, resulting in a nine-yard touchdown pass to Senior wide receiver Eli Koukoulis and the extra point kicked by junior Anthony Weidman was in their favor.
The team’s strong start led to senior running back Chad Blaszky scoring a touchdown on a one-yard run, gaining a 14-point lead over the Rams early in the second quarter. Blaszky had 28 carries this game, with a total of 161 yards and two touchdowns– improving his season total to 7 touchdowns.
Alongside Blaszky, senior wide receiver Michael Matich had a major contribution to the Wolves’ win. His 23-yard touchdown reception from sophomore Dennis Riordan maintained the Wolves’ comfortable lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
As the offense remained strong, Westconn’s defense also had an extremely effective game. Senior Matt Forti and junior Myles Wilson each contributed a sack for a total of negative 14 yards. Wilson also had an interception in the 3rd quarter. Likewise, senior Luke Pappalardo intercepted the ball twice with one of them being brought back 55 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
The well fought win was celebrated among the team, coaches, staff, and fans as it was the first time Western Connecticut had beaten Framingham State since joining the MASCAC’s. It was an exciting day to be a Wolf!
The energy from this game carried into the next where Westconn defeated the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime Academy, 24-3, on October 22. The Wolves are now 5-3 with a three-game winning streak with only two more home games this season. We host Worcester State University on October 29 at 2:00pm and Fitchburg State College on November 5 at 12:00pm.
Attendance is encouraged at both games as the Wolves are putting in devoted hours to win out the rest of the season.
