As previously reported, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes visited Western Connecticut State University last semester as a guest lecturer for American Government. On September 7th, the congresswoman visited campus once more, conducting a live interview with our student radio station, WXCI 91.7 FM.
There were a multitude of topics discussed by the representative and the interviewer, Evan Walker, sports director of WXCI and DJ of the broadcast The Oval Office. Some of the topics included her history as a teacher and her previous status as National Teacher of the Year. Moving into politics, the congresswoman discussed major bills she has been involved in passing, as well as her take on bills recently passed by the House of Representatives.
Students and listeners of WXCI were able to tune in live and call or email questions for Walker to ask Representative Hayes. Some of the topics suggested by listeners and discussed were healthcare, religious holidays, and the wave of banned books across the nation.

During the process of the interview, representative Hayes was enamored by the appearance of the station. During the opening of the show, she called The Oval Office segment “cooler than the real Oval Office.” After the interview was completed, the Representative was invited to sign one of the walls of WXCI, which she was happy to oblige.
A recording of the interview will be uploaded to the WXCI website under the archives tab in the next few days. For those who missed the interview and would like to listen to it when it is uploaded, please check in on wxci.org
